What to Look For

Clean clothes and linens are a must for allergy sufferers. New washers feature special cleaning cycles that can remove allergens from clothes and other items in the wash.

We tested two washers that featured special allergen-removal settings. While we didn't specifically test this feature, the manufacturers of both the LG WM3360H and the Whirlpool WFW94HEX claim the devices can remove 95 percent of pet dander and dust mites. The washers feature easy-to-clean interiors that don't build up dirt and debris. It's important to remember that these cycles also use more energy and take more time.

Regardless of special cleaning cycles, if you suffer from allergies, look for a washer that has a cycle that heats water up to 131 degrees F—the temperature that kills dust mites.
